Role description

Job summary

BHRUT is seeking an experienced Locum Consultant Neurosurgeon with an interest in Neuro-Oncology and Functional Neurosurgery to join its Regional Neurosciences service.

BHRUT provides specialist neurosurgical care across Essex and Outer North East London, including neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery, neurovascular, skull base, pituitary and complex spinal services, supported by dedicated theatres, a neurosurgical ward and Neuro ICU.

The successful candidate will provide consultant-level care in neuro-oncology and functional neurosurgery, including complex brain tumour surgery, MDT participation, outpatient clinics and elective operating.

The post holder will also support the wider neurosurgical service, including general cranial neurosurgery and consultant on-call duties, in line with the agreed job plan.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide consultant-led neurosurgical care within a regional neurosciences service, delivering high-quality, evidence-based and patient-centred care across elective, urgent and emergency pathways.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide consultant assessment, diagnosis, surgical treatment and follow-up for patients with brain and central nervous system tumours.
  • Undertake specialist neuro-oncology outpatient clinics, inpatient care, elective operating lists and multidisciplinary team participation.
  • Apply contemporary neuro-oncology and functional neurosurgical techniques to maximise safe tumour resection while preserving neurological, cognitive and quality-of-life outcomes.
  • Participate actively in the regional neuro-oncology MDT, working collaboratively with oncology, neurology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, neuropsychology, rehabilitation, palliative care and specialist nursing colleagues.
  • Provide clear, compassionate and evidence-based communication with patients and their families, including discussion of complex treatment options, risks, prognosis and expected functional outcomes.
  • Participate fully in the consultant neurosurgical on-call rota, providing emergency neurosurgical assessment and management, remote advice and imaging review for referring hospitals, and appropriate cross-cover for consultant colleagues

About us

We're an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and our patients are happy with.

They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

We operate from two main sites - KGH in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We're campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen's and get rid of corridor care.

We're proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We're also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

We run a Women's Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
