Job summary
The Theatre Technician works as part of the multidisciplinary peri-operative team, supporting Registered Practitioners to deliver safe and effective care. The postholder undertakes delegated clinical and non-clinical duties, prepares and maintains theatre environments, assists with patient transfers and positioning, and ensures equipment and stock are available and safely used.
The postholder will work flexibly to support the operating theatre service, including participation in shift patterns that cover extended hours.
Main duties of the job
To assist Registered Practitioners in the delivery of patient care in Theatres and provide skilled assistance to the multi-disciplinary team. To circulate for a Trust defined scope of operative procedures (disciplines offered by the Trust). Perform extended clinical skills following competency sign off including; ECG recording, Venepuncture, basic wound care, Removal of simple dressings, observations and escalation based on NEWS2. Support the safe positioning, prepping, and draping of patients using advanced knowledge of surgical requirements. (i.e. traction, assistance with application of plaster application of tourniquet). To undertake day-to-day routine duties the postholder is required to use various items of equipment and have the knowledge and skills to store and maintain simple and highly complex / expensive pieces of equipment. Set up and assist with specialist equipment such as; Diathermy machines, Suction and insufflation units, Laparoscopic/arthroscopy camera stacks, Tourniquets and pressure devices. Perform swab, sharps and instrument counts with a Registered practitioner in accordance with Trust policy. Assemble and dismantle theatre equipment, troubleshoot basic equipment faults and escalate appropriately.
