Job summary

We are looking to recruit a proactive, dynamic team member to assume the role of Senior Biomedical Scientist in the point of care team (POCT) which forms part of the clinical biochemistry team

The post holder must demonstrate effective leadership and management capabilities while working collaboratively to achieve shared goals.

Successful Band 7 candidates MUST be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.

Main duties of the job

a) Working as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service for point of care in accordance with national and professional standards.

b) Provide Senior Biomedical Scientist input into the point of care team whilst being responsible for the day-to-day running of this team.

c) With other senior staff, participate in the supervision, training and development of staff in the department ensuring that competencies are completed.

d) Together with the Blood Sciences Management, develop and validate new point of care deviceswhich will contribute to the development of the services provided to meet the requirement of users.

e) To ensure the promotion of awareness of users' needs and requirements throughout the laboratory organisation.

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Post Graduate Qualification equivalent to fellowship of the IBMS, MSc or equivalent experience.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience with troubleshooting and contingency procedures for POCT analysers
  • minimum 4 years post registration experience in a Blood Sciences speciality discipline
  • Experience of developing and documenting Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Working knowledge and experience of common industry standard software applications (e.g. Microsoft excel, word etc.).
  • Experience in organisation and implementation of QA schemes.
  • Evidence of participation in Continuing Professional Development

Knowledge skills and abilities

Essential

  • Have knowledge of staff management techniques e.g. supervision and appraisal, interviewing, managing sickness etc
  • High level of theoretical and practical knowledge of blood sciences techniques and their clinical applications.
  • Specialist scientific and technical knowledge of POCT testing systems
  • Knowledge of the protocols and Standard Operating Procedures used within the Department including those relating to Health and Safety regulations
  • Knowledge and experience of departmental IT systems.
  • Knowledge of national guidelines, professional standards and Laboratory accreditation as appropriate to POCT.
