Job summary

St Luke's Hospice is seeking an experienced and inspirational Retail Area Manager to lead and develop a portfolio of charity shops and retail premises. The successful candidate will be a commercially focused leader with significant multi-site retail management experience, responsible for maximising sales, profitability and operational performance across the retail division while supporting the Hospice's mission and values. The role requires strong leadership, excellent people management skills, and the ability to drive positive change and continuous improvement.

Main duties of the job

Lead, coach and support Shop Managers, Deputy Managers and volunteer teams to achieve sales and performance targets. Drive income generation, profitability, Gift Aid performance and operational excellence across multiple retail sites. Monitor and analyse sales, budgets and key performance indicators to identify opportunities for growth and improvement. Ensure high standards of customer service, visual merchandising, shop presentation and stock management. Manage recruitment, induction, training, appraisal and performance processes in line with organisational policies. Ensure compliance with health and safety, security, financial and retail operating procedures. Support the delivery of the Retail Strategy and identify innovative opportunities to develop and strengthen the retail operation.

Job responsibilities

The Retail Area Manager will be responsible for the overall performance of an assigned portfolio of shops and retail premises, ensuring income, profitability and operational standards are achieved. Key responsibilities include: Managing and developing retail teams to deliver excellent customer service and maximise sales performance. Recruiting, training, motivating and supporting Shop Managers, Deputy Managers and volunteers. Monitoring financial performance, controlling budgets and ensuring robust stock management processes are in place. Carrying out regular shop visits, audits and performance reviews, implementing action plans where required. Ensuring compliance with health and safety, security and organisational procedures across all locations. Building strong relationships with colleagues, volunteers, customers, local communities and external stakeholders. Supporting strategic retail initiatives, shop acquisitions and continuous improvement projects that contribute to the future success of the retail operation.
