Job summary

The Junction Surgery is seeking an experienced, commercially minded and forward-thinking Practice Business Manager to join our established GP practice in Huddersfield.We are particularly interested in candidates who are commercially savvy, confident with people management and comfortable taking ownership of the business and operational aspects of a busy GP practice. Main duties of the job

The Practice Business Manager will have responsibility for the effective management and development of the practice, including:

Providing strong operational and strategic leadership across the practice.
Managing and supporting the practice workforce, including recruitment, performance management, staff development and HR matters.
Overseeing practice finances, budgets, income streams and expenditure.
Ensuring the practice maximises income from its GMS contract, QOF, enhanced services and other NHS opportunities.
Working with the Partners to identify opportunities to increase our patient list size and grow practice income.
Ensuring appropriate workforce planning and effective use of clinical and non-clinical resources.
Maintaining robust governance, policies and systems to support ongoing CQC compliance.
Monitoring performance and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity and patient services.
Working effectively with the PCN, ICB and wider NHS organisations.
Supporting the Partners with business planning and the longer-term strategic development of the practice.
Helping ensure the practice remains a stable, sustainable and financially viable organisation within an evolving primary care environment.

We are a two-partner, 6,700-patient GMS practice, serving a diverse inner-Huddersfield population. Job responsibilities

Responsibility for the smooth, efficient and profitable running of the Practice, and maintaining a happy and committed team.

Also keeping the partners abreast of forthcoming changes in the NHS and giving them options for responding to change.

Job responsibilities:

Personnel and Training

Managing the administrative staff and non-clinical management of nursing staff, and taking lead responsibility in staff appraisal and in organising recruitment selection and training.

Ensuring contracts of employment are provided to all staff and that all relevant employment legislation is followed. Ensuring the Practices employment policies and procedures are comprehensive and up to date.

Finance and Profitability

Responsibility for the bookkeeping, petty cash and other financial aspects of the Practice including payroll and NHS pension scheme arrangements

Ensuring that all income and expenditure due to or made by the Practice is received or recorded in the accounts of the Practice and preparing financial reports

Information Technology

Responsibility for the computer system including organising any maintenance and developments to the system. Ensuring compliance with Data Protection legislation including smart-card administration.

Premises and Equipment

Responsibility for security, repairs, insurance and maintenance of premises, services and equipment.

Ensuring that the Practice complies with aspects of Health & Safety at Work legislation.

Patient Services

Implementing and maintaining systems to receive patient enquiries and suggestions including oversight of the Practice based complaints procedure

Reviewing and updating the Practice information leaflet/website, Practice publicity and health education material.

Future Planning

Preparing a Practice Business Plan, Annual Report and Practice aims and objectives as required by Dr Ali

Keeping abreast of developments within the NHS that might impinge on the Practice or individual partners and offering options for consideration by the partners.

External Relationships

Ensuring efficient internal and external communication including being the focal point for contact with the Primary Care Organisation, solicitor, accountant and other bodies

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Business management NVQ Level 3 or equivalent hands-on administrative experience in a general practice for 2 years or more.
High interpersonal skills to inspire staff and align teams with the practice's vision.
Ability to allocate resources strategically and safeguard profit margins while optimizing existing workflows.
Competence in handling accounts, managing payroll percentages, monitoring overhead, and reviewing cash flow
Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR), practice management software, and the ability to analyze operational metrics for reports.

Desirable

Familiarity with compliance standards, risk management, and regulatory frameworks (such as NHS guidelines or quality standards).
Experience hiring, training, appraising, and managing performance for non-clinical or multi-disciplinary teams.
Experience with Iris payroll
Experience of NHS Pensions
Experience of Xero accounting
