Job summary

Orthopaedic Clinical Nurse Specialist (22.5 per week. Fixed term contract for 12 months (opportunities may be available to work additional hours on the orthopaedic ward beyond the contracted 22.5 hours, depending on service need)

UCLH (University College London Hospitals) Foundation Trust and Whittington Health NHS Trust work in partnership to provide elective orthopaedic services within North Central London (NCL). In 2021, the Trusts collaborated to create the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Grafton Way.

As a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) you will be based at the Grafton Way Building (GWB) at UCLH and assist in providing specialist care for patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery with the aim of ensuring a seamless transition of care between UCLH and the Whittington Hospital.

We are looking for an experienced orthopaedic nurse with a commitment to enhanced recovery and excellent surgical care to join the orthopaedic department as an Orthopaedic Clinical Nurse Specialist. This role will join the established CNS team and contribute to the comprehensive, world class service we provide to our patients in their peri and postoperative journey.

You will work closely as part of the multidisciplinary team with our consultants, ward nurses and allied health professionals to provide world class care, reduce length of stay, enhance patient experience, and ensure a supportive discharge process.

Main duties of the job

You will follow a patients journey from beginning to end and support in the pre-operation process by taking an active part in our patient education, Surgical School. In addition, you will review inpatients and take part in the daily ward rounds. You will also review patients on discharge with a telephone follow up clinic, using your clinical skills to assess if further intervention is required.

You will help to run the Virtual Arthroplasty Clinic (VAR) which reviews patients at certain intervals post operatively. You will be expected to review x-rays and interpret Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) data. We are keen to develop staff to enhance their skills and would look to develop you in this role.

You will work closely with our Trauma CNS and trauma MDT and provide support cover when required.

Clinical responsibilities

o Contribute to the multidisciplinary preoperative preparation of patients undergoing elective orthopaedic surgery.o Liaise with the surgical team, clinic staff and the admissions services to facilitate and/or improve the pre-admission process.o Provide clinical support and facilitate the patient journey whilst an inpatient.o Liaise with members of the MDT to support admitted patients with their treatment and inpatient stay.
