The General Surgical Services within the hospitals of the Worcestershire Acute NHS Trust which includes Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital Redditch and the Treatment Centre at Kidderminster have been a subject of a very thorough Service Review and became completely realigned in April 2018. This realignment has seen the centralisation of all major elective gastro-intestinal surgery and emergency general surgery onto the Worcester site whilst maintaining an ambulatory model of surgical emergency assessment service at the Alexandra Hospital. A further realignment of elective surgery that is underway will see the development of an Elective Surgical site at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. The Trust aims to fully maintain and develop outpatient, investigative (Endoscopy and Radiology) and Short-stay/Day case surgery services at the Worcester Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, Kidderminster Hospital and the Worcestershire Community hospitals.

The successful candidate will join 8 colorectal surgeons who have already established a county-wide colorectal team working between the Worcester Royal Hospital and Alexandra Hospital, with an emphasis on county-wide working.
The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with the established Consultants to fully assist with the changes in the General Surgical Service. The Emergency Duty commitments will include a week with no elective commitments. In addition an Emergency Surgical Triage Clinic (ESTC) has been established and runs weekly.
The successful candidate will be fully trained laparoscopic colorectal and general surgeon with subspecialist interest and training in rectal cancer surgery. A formal interest in Research and Development will also be encouraged with sessions assigned and recognised in the Job plan (the individual will be expected to have formal links with a University Research Programme).
Mentoring will be provided to support a new and possibly inexperienced colleague
