Job summary

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Breast Radiologist to join an existing team at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate would join a team consisting of 26 Consultant Radiologists in providing a comprehensive radiology service to patients in West Suffolk and its environs. All Radiologists have specialist interests and support the relevant multidisciplinary teams.

The breast imaging team benefits from long established skill mix and comprises 3 consultant radiologists, 2 consultant radiographers, 1 trainee consultant radiographer and 1 advanced practitioner. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality breast imaging in both the breast screening programmed and the symptomatic breast service.

Days and sessions can be flexible to suit.

Hourly Pay

Core hours - 7.00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. (Monday - Friday) - £100 ph

Unsocial hours -7.00 p.m. - 7.00 a.m. (including Bank Holidays and Weekends) - £120 ph

Main duties of the job

In the breast department the post holder would share responsibility for covering symptomatic and assessment clinics, ultrasound guided pre-treatment localisations.

Most stereo procedures are undertaken by consultant radiographers or advanced practitioners, ultrasound excisions are undertaken by some of the team. Screen reading in dedicated sessions includes reading follow up and family history mammograms. MRI is double read independently by two breast radiologists.

Timetabled MDT preparation and presentation is shared, with Consultant Radiographers participating in presentation of new cases.

Consensus meetings occur three times a week at dedicated times.

The post holder will join the other radiologists sharing the service provision for the Radiology Department, which would include reporting CT, MR and XR for inpatients / emergency department attenders, outpatients and GP patients and performing and reporting Ultrasounds.

On call work may be included in the role which comprises evening and weekend daytime cover. Overnight acute studies are outsourced with the radiologist acting as back up in case of system failures or for other radiological queries that need immediate input

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To provide specialist radiological advice and services to users of the radiology departments.
  • To accept responsibility for compliance with Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposures) Regulations, along with the radiation protection supervisor and the radiation protection advisor.
  • To accept personal responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred.
  • To provide advice and information as required to clinical colleagues and other staff.
  • To report multimodality studies within own skill set.
  • To share responsibility for the supervision, training, and professional development of radiographic staff and other staff as necessary.
  • To participate in teaching sessions with other clinical specialties.
  • To attend regular department meetings and participate in department management and development of the service.
  • To participate fully in personal and departmental audit and governance procedures.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register in Clinical Radiology or be eligible for entry (within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Training) at the time of interview and hold a licence to practice.

Desirable

  • Any other relevant qualifications.

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Clinical Radiology.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Experience in running MDTs.
  • Experience of implementing IRMER Regulations.

Desirable

  • Interests to compliment the department.

Knowledge

Essential

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following:- - PLAB 1 - PLAB 2 If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.
