Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistant to join our large, friendly and well-established GP practice in North Leeds. This will be a full-time role for 37.5 hours a week.

Ideally, we would like to appoint an experienced Healthcare Assistant, particularly someone with experience working within primary care and who is confident undertaking clinical skills such as phlebotomy, observations and NHS Health Checks. However, we are also open to considering someone who is new to general practice. For us, the right attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn are just as important as previous experience.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time Healthcare Assistant position, with the possibility of working your hours across 4 days, depending on the successful candidate's preference and the needs of the practice

We are open Monday to Friday 8am6:30pm, with an evening surgery on a Thursday until 8pm and we share early mornings and 6:30pm finishes amongst the team.

The Healthcare Assistant will work as part of our wider multidisciplinary team, providing high-quality clinical support to our GPs, Practice Nurses and wider clinical team.

About us

We are a large teaching practice in Roundhay, North Leeds with a practice population of approximately 14000 patients. Our team comprises of 3 GP partners, 7 salaried GPs, 3 Registrars, 1 ANP, 4 nurses and 3 HCAs. The wider multi-disciplinary team also consists of a physiotherapists, pharmacists and well being coaches who also work on site. We also have a large and friendly services team. We work together and learn from each other promoting patient centred care. We have regular meetings and training sessions with annual socials at Christmas and in the summer.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The main duties of the Healthcare Assistant will include:

Phlebotomy: taking blood samples safely and effectively, ensuring appropriate labelling, processing and preparation of specimens in line with practice protocols.

Clinical observations: undertaking blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturations, height, weight and BMI measurements, as appropriate.

NHS Health Checks: carrying out health checks, collecting relevant clinical information and supporting patients with health promotion and preventative care.

Long-term condition support: assisting the nursing and clinical team with data collection and routine monitoring for patients with long-term conditions, including blood pressure, weight, urine testing and other relevant observations.

ECGs: undertaking ECGs as required and ensuring they are completed and recorded appropriately.

Urinalysis and specimen collection: carrying out routine urine testing and supporting the collection and processing of other clinical specimens.

Vaccination support: supporting the nursing team with vaccination clinics and other seasonal programmes, where appropriate and within the individual's training and scope of practice.

Wound care support: assisting the nursing team with wound care and dressing procedures as appropriate and within competence.

Chaperoning: acting as a chaperone for patients when required and in accordance with practice policy.

Infection prevention and control: maintaining high standards of infection prevention and control and ensuring clinical areas are clean, safe and appropriately stocked.

Clinical room management: ensuring equipment and clinical rooms are maintained, cleaned and stocked appropriately, reporting any issues to the relevant member of the team.

General clinical support: assisting the Practice Nurses, GPs and wider clinical team with patient care and other appropriate duties within the HCA's scope of practice.

  • Experience working as a Healthcare Assistant or in a relevant healthcare setting
  • Effective time management, with the ability to plan, manage and organise workload
