Job summary

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an ambitious Consultant Vascular Surgeon to join a high-performing vascular unit delivering excellent outcomes, high-volume practice and truly integrated multidisciplinary care across Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

Based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, you will become part of a well-established consultant-led service providing 24/7 elective and emergency vascular care to a population of around 850,000. This is an exciting time to join the team, with ambitious plans to further develop the service, including a state-of-the-art hybrid theatre, expanding endovascular opportunities and strong academic links with the Three Counties Medical School.

You will work alongside an experienced and supportive teamconsultant vascular surgeons in a GMC-accredited training centre with an excellent reputation for quality, innovation and collaboration. The unit consistently delivers excellent clinical outcomes, ranks among the top 10 nationally for elective infrarenal AAA repair volume, and offers the opportunity to shape the future of vascular care within a progressive regional network.

Main duties of the job

This is a replacement post within a well-established and supportive vascular team.

The successful applicant will:

  • Deliver a comprehensive vascular surgical service, including elective and emergency care, to patients across the Trust and referring primary care services
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide safe, effective, and timely patient care
  • Undertake regular outpatient clinics across Worcestershire Royal Hospital and Alexandra Hospital, Redditch
  • Participate in a weekly arterial operating list at WRH, with opportunities for dual consultant operating and mentoring where appropriate
  • Contribute to a fortnightly day-case list (half-day), primarily for venous or minor arterial procedures
  • Have the opportunity to develop and participate in surgeon-led endovascular (angioplasty) lists depending on experience and service needs
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, governance, and audit activity.
  • Provide expert advice to colleagues within the Trust and to primary care practitioners
  • Support emergency pathways, including A&E and acute medicine, to ensure timely patient flow
  • Contribute to cross-site and cross-county working, with services delivered closer to patients homes wherever possible

Job description

Job responsibilities

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of

the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

  • A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
  • The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
  • The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
  • The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Vascular
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
