Role description
Job summary
We are looking to appoint five enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultants into new roles which combine General Internal Medicine service with a Group 1 medical specialty. We are looking for candidates with a passion for delivering high quality care to patients in a variety of settings, who are enthusiastic about GIM and who want an opportunity to shape and deliver a new service which will enhance the care we provide for our patients. We are looking for clinicians who can help to shape and develop our brand new GIM service as well as delivering high quality care and education to our trainee doctors. These roles provide exposure to a broad and varied case mix, supporting the development of advanced clinical skills and providing excellent opportunities for leadership, service improvement, multidisciplinary working, clinical education, and involvement in research.
Candidates should be dual qualified in General Internal Medicine (GIM) and a Group 1 specialty (gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory medicine, cardiology, stroke medicine, infectious diseases, acute medicine, renal medicine, palliative care, diabetes and endocrinology, rheumatology, geriatrics).
Main duties of the job
These are 10 PA posts, split between one of the above specialist services (4 PA DCC) and GIM (4 PA DCC). Two SPA are offered to include 1.5 core SPA plus an additional 0.5 for educational and clinical supervision of trainee doctors and ACPs within GIM. In year 1 this additional 0.5 will be used to support induction and orientation if this is a successful candidate's first consultant post. A further 0.5 SPA will be available for other appropriate activities that benefit both the consultant and the service after the first 12 months.
The GIM commitment will include 10 weeks per year on a 30 bedded GIM ward, acute and GIM clinics, supervision of the Virtual ward and support for the medical take. Clinic sessions within GIM come with supported admin time between 0.25 PA.
Specialist work in the Group 1 specialty will vary depending on the needs of the service and the interests of the successful candidate but will include the opportunity to develop subspecialty training in one of the biggest teaching hospitals in the country.
On call commitments will be either within the medical take and GIM or split between GIM and the specialty to do a reduced proportion of both on call rotas (depending on speciality).
