Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant General Anaesthetist to join our friendly, forward-thinking and ambitious Department of Anaesthesia at the James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The James Paget University Hospital is a modern district general hospital serving a population of approximately 250,000 across Norfolk and Suffolk, with additional seasonal demand from our coastal location. This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and dynamic department that provides anaesthetic services across a broad range of surgical specialties. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a specialist interest and contribute to service development, education, quality improvement and research.
Our department continues to evolve and innovate. We have recently opened a dedicated Elective Orthopaedic Hub, expanded our elective capacity and established a robotic surgery programme. We are also actively engaged in planning for the future development of healthcare services through the national New Hospital Programme.

The department provides anaesthetic services to:
- General Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery
- Orthopaedics and Trauma
- Obstetrics
- Gynaecology
- Urology
- ENT
- Ophthalmology
- Community Dental Services
- Emergency Surgery
Facilities include:
- 10 operating theatres
- Dedicated Day Surgery Unit with 3 theatres
- Separate maternity theatre and recovery facilities
- Integrated 12-bedded ICU/HDU
- Dedicated Elective Orthopaedic Hub with 2 operating theatres, 4 recovery bays and 8 day-care pods
- Established robotic surgery service
- Active regional anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine and quality improvement programmes

About us
The successful applicant will:
- Share responsibility for the provision of general anaesthetic services across the Trust.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota, including obstetric anaesthesia cover.
- Deliver anaesthesia across a wide range of surgical specialties.
- Contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
- Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, audit and patient safety initiatives.
- Support the development and delivery of departmental services.
- Participate in continuing professional development and revalidation activities.
- Develop and promote interests in research, innovation and service improvement.
