UK Skilled Worker Visa English Language Requirement: B2 Level Explained
From 8 January 2026, the minimum English language requirement for new Skilled Worker visa applications increased from B1 (intermediate) to B2 (upper-intermediate). This is one of the most significant changes to affect individual applicants in recent years.
This guide explains exactly what B2 means, who needs to meet it, the exemptions, which tests are accepted, and practical tips to prepare.
What Changed and Why
The B1 to B2 increase was first announced in the May 2025 Immigration White Paper as part of the government's plan to ensure sponsored workers can integrate effectively into UK workplaces and communities.
B1 (old requirement) = intermediate level, roughly equivalent to GCSE standard. You can handle everyday conversations and understand the main points of clear standard speech.
B2 (new requirement) = upper-intermediate level, roughly equivalent to A-level standard. You can understand complex texts, interact fluently with native speakers, and produce clear, detailed writing on a wide range of subjects.
The jump from B1 to B2 is significant. Many applicants who would have comfortably met B1 will need additional preparation for B2.
Who Needs to Meet B2?
The B2 requirement applies to new applications made on or after 8 January 2026 for:
- Skilled Worker visa — first-time applicants and those switching from another route (e.g., Graduate visa)
- Scale-up visa
- High Potential Individual (HPI) visa
Important: who does NOT need B2
- Existing Skilled Worker visa holders who were granted leave on the basis of B1 — you do not need to retake your test. B1 remains valid for extensions and settlement applications
- Nationals of exempt countries — including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and other majority English-speaking nations
- Applicants with a UK degree or a degree taught in English from an approved institution
- Settlement (ILR) applicants — the English requirement for ILR remains at B1
Accepted English Language Tests
You must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a Home Office-approved provider. The test must assess all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Approved SELT providers for B2 are:
| Test Provider | Test Name | B2 Score Required |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS (UKVI) | IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General) | 5.5 in each component |
| Pearson | PTE Academic UKVI | 51 in each component |
| LanguageCert | LanguageCert International ESOL SELT | B2 pass in each component |
| Trinity College London | GESE (speaking/listening) + ISE (reading/writing) | Grade B2 in each component |
Important: Your test result must be less than 2 years old at the date of your visa application. Plan your test date carefully — if you take the test too early, it may expire before your application is processed.
B1 vs B2: What is the Practical Difference?
Here is a practical comparison to help you understand the step up:
| Skill | B1 (Old) | B2 (New) |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Understand simple factual texts | Understand complex articles and technical writing in your field |
| Writing | Write simple connected text on familiar topics | Write clear, detailed essays and reports with arguments |
| Listening | Understand main points of clear standard speech | Understand extended speech and lectures, follow complex arguments |
| Speaking | Deal with most everyday situations | Interact fluently with native speakers without strain |
How to Prepare for B2
1. Take a practice test first
Before booking your official SELT, take a free practice test at the B2 level. IELTS, PTE, and LanguageCert all offer free practice materials on their websites. This will show you which skills need the most work.
2. Focus on your weakest skill
The B2 requirement applies to each component individually. You cannot compensate for a weak writing score with a strong speaking score. Identify your weakest area and prioritise it.
3. Allow enough preparation time
If you are currently at a strong B1 level, most language schools recommend 3 to 6 months of focused preparation to reach B2. Do not leave this to the last minute — test centre slots fill up quickly.
4. Book your test early
SELT test centres have limited availability, especially for IELTS for UKVI. Book at least 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Remember that results typically take 13 days for IELTS and 5 days for PTE.
5. Consider the test format
Different tests suit different people. If you are stronger in speaking, Trinity College London's GESE exam may suit you. If you prefer computer-based testing, PTE Academic UKVI offers faster results. Research each option before deciding.
Impact on Employers
The B2 requirement also affects sponsors:
- Do not assign a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) until the applicant can demonstrate B2 proficiency
- If an application is refused because the applicant fails the English test, the CoS is cancelled and the employer must pay a fresh Immigration Skills Charge for any new CoS
- Migration lawyers warn that rejection rates may increase in the first year of the new requirement
Employers should factor English test timelines into their recruitment planning. It is now advisable to make job offers conditional on passing a B2 SELT before assigning the CoS.
What About Settlement (ILR)?
The English language requirement for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) currently remains at B1. This has not changed as a result of the January 2026 update.
However, under the proposed Earned Settlement reforms, the government plans to increase the settlement English requirement to B2 from March 2027. If you are planning for long-term settlement, it is worth preparing for B2 now.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need B2 if I am extending my Skilled Worker visa?
No. If you were granted your visa before 8 January 2026 on the basis of B1, you can extend without retaking the test. B1 remains valid for extensions.
Which IELTS score is B2?
For IELTS for UKVI, B2 requires a minimum score of 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
Can I use a degree taught in English instead of a SELT?
Yes. A degree from a UK institution or from a recognised institution where the course was taught in English can be used to meet the requirement. The degree must be verified through ENIC (formerly NARIC).
Is B2 required for dependants?
No. Dependants of Skilled Worker visa holders do not need to meet the B2 English requirement.
